Every object is measured against the golden ratio and against the actual dimensions of a modern residential space. If a table is 4cm too tall to feel right in a 2.6-metre room, it will not be listed. Proportion is not subjective — it is measurable.
Every object reveals what it is made of. Grain patterns are visible. Joinery is left as a feature rather than hidden. Where a material has been treated, the treatment is documented. Where it has been left raw, that choice is deliberate and disclosed.
The object should be capable of serving a household for a decade without requiring replacement. This means repairable joints, replaceable components, and materials that age well rather than degrade. Longevity is the standard against which every recommendation is measured.
Objects designed to be replaced in a season are not objects we can honestly recommend. Where a style is viral, we wait a year before considering it. Most do not survive the wait.
Particle board disguised as timber, cam-lock joinery, and glued dowels fail long before the room they occupied is finished being used. These are not objects. They are placeholders.
A lamp that stops working when the app is discontinued was never a lamp. It was a service with a shutdown date. We do not list objects whose function depends on an external platform.

Our supply chain is intentionally narrow. We work with a small number of makers in Scandinavia, Northern Italy, and Japan, each of whom we have visited in person and whose working methods we understand.
Every piece of timber is traceable to a specific forest and a specific harvest. Every workshop operates on principles of fair labour and long-term material sourcing.
Where a material cannot be traced, the object does not enter the index. Where a producer cannot be visited, the relationship is not established. Where a claim about sustainability cannot be verified, the claim is not repeated.

Three related services that connect high-design intentions to physical living spaces. Each engagement is led by a furnituresweb editor and conducted in collaboration with the makers and workshops the studio has worked with for years.

An interior planning engagement begins with a site visit. We measure the room, photograph the existing conditions, and discuss how the space is actually used — where light enters, where traffic flows, where the room is quiet and where it is active. From there, we produce a furniture layout proposal that reflects both the physical dimensions and the behavioural patterns of the household.
The proposal includes placement drawings at 1:20 scale, dimension checks against all proposed objects, circulation paths for the primary and secondary routes through the room, and reasoning behind each placement decision. Where existing furniture is to be retained, it is included in the plan and evaluated against the same criteria as new pieces.

Material consultation is a physical process, not a digital one. We do not send PDFs of wood samples. We send actual samples — cut from the same production stock as the finished piece — and we work through the tactile and visual properties of each candidate in person, or through a courier kit that arrives at the client's home.
The consultation covers wood species, finish type (oiled, waxed, lacquered, or left raw), joint treatment, textile selection for upholstered elements, and how each material interacts with the light conditions of the specific room. Where a material is not appropriate for the environment it will live in — high humidity, direct sun, household with pets or children — we say so, even if the material is beautiful in isolation.

Custom furniture begins where an existing object does not meet the room's actual requirements. A piece may need to be 5cm shorter, or 12cm wider, or use a specific material to match an existing floor, or accommodate a specific function that no production furniture performs. Custom work addresses those specific gaps.
Each custom piece is developed alongside a specific workshop from our network of European makers — most in Northern Italy, some in Scandinavia. We produce initial concept sketches, then refine dimensions and materials through a prototyping phase, and finally coordinate production with the workshop. Throughout, the client retains approval at each milestone.
Custom furniture is a longer engagement than either planning or material consultation. It is also the most personal. Where the room calls for it, we consider it the most interesting of the three services to deliver.

Every engagement begins in the room itself. We measure, photograph, and discuss how the space is actually used. Nothing is proposed before the physical conditions are understood.
A written proposal sets out the plan, the reasoning behind each decision, and the cost. The client approves the proposal before any fabrication or commissioning begins.
Where the engagement involves physical objects, we coordinate delivery, assembly, and placement. The final on-site check confirms that the room matches the drawing and that the objects perform as intended.
furnituresweb receives no payment from makers, workshops, or brands for including their pieces in our recommendations. Every object we suggest to a client is evaluated against the same criteria we apply to our own index — proportion, material honesty, and longevity.
Where an affiliate relationship exists, it is disclosed at the point of the recommendation. Where a maker is not appropriate for a project, we say so even if we have a long-standing relationship with them.
The value of a recommendation depends entirely on the independence of the person making it. This is the foundation of every engagement we run, and no commercial relationship has ever been permitted to compromise it.
